Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Back injuries result from damage, wear, or trauma to the bones, muscles, or other tissues of the back. Common back injuries include sprains and strains, herniated disks, and fractured vertebrae. The lumbar is often the site of back pain. The area is susceptible because of its flexibility and the amount of body weight it regularly bears. It is estimated that low-back pain may affect as much as 50 to 70 percent of the general population in the United States.

Low-back pain is often the result of incorrect lifting methods and posture. Repetitive lifting, bending, and twisting motions of the torso affect both the degree of severity and frequency of low-back pain. In addition, low-back pain may also be the result of bad lifting habits. Sedentary lifestyles most often lead to weak abdominal muscles and hamstrings. This causes the stronger muscles which have remained strong to pull the body away from its optimal anatomical form. The imbalanced muscles cause people to continue to perform these repetitive actions. This results in misplaced force application within the spine, often resulting in hemorrhage of disks within the spinal column.

Asked by Ms.Vang - Thu Jul 3 16:19:47 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have a lawyer. You will be paying your lawyer a very large chunk of any settlement you get. Easily 33% plus expenses. Therefore, ask him. Thats what you pay him for. Stop wasting our time.

Can a lower back injury cause pain in the abdomen and groin area?
Q. I have a herniated disk in S1-L5 and experience periodic abdominal cramps and pain radiating into my groin area. Can the two be connected to a lower back problem?
Asked by dtf13 - Sat Jun 14 11:59:29 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is very possible to have referred pain to your groin and abdomen from a herniated disc at this level in your spine. Although the L5 nerve root innervates your butt, lower leg, and foot along with S1. It is possible that you have another herniated disc above L5-S1. If you sneeze or cough and that reproduces your symptoms, that is related to your back for sure. Be sure to have a thorough neurological exam to assess your sensation, muscle function, and reflexes.

Can I do heavy squats after a back injury?
Q. Recently took an MRI and found that I have a slight disc bulge at L4-L5 in the lower back region. The injury was about 6 months ago. If I take physical therapy, will I be able to go back to squatting with heavy weights (like 200+).
Asked by JPC - Fri Feb 19 11:35:42 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Is the injury 100% healed? Yes-yes, No-it will aggravate the unhealed injury causing you lots of pain. You will compensate and then injure the imbalanced muscles... Physical therapy will not fix/heal a disc bulge, neither will surgery. Honestly I have no idea if this will be of any use to you either. But the price is right so give it a try...or you could just stop weight lifting...suffer...
