Will disclosing a lower back injury with my last employer on a application hurt my chances on getting a job?
Q. I had a lower back injury about 12 years ago and was retrained to do the job I am doing now. I have been doing my new job for 10 years now and have had no back problems other than normal back pain. I am thinking about applying for a new job but wonder if I should put down my back injury as the reason for leaving my other job?

A. If you are physically capable of performing the essential job functions of the position you are applying for then no, keep mum about any other injuries or medical conditions. Even if the application DOES ask, don't answer. Such a question is illegal. Richard

Besides epelepsy, in what ways is Dilantin used? My doctor prescribed it for me for a back injury.?
Q. I suffered a muscular lower back injury and from what I have read about Dilantin, I am not sure about using it. I need advice.

A. Many medications have more than one effect. Medications that are used in lower doses than what they are specifically made for, you can have trouble looking for any info on, one what they will do for you. But don't panic. Your Doctor does know what he's doing. Dilantin is a neuroleptic. But works well for neurological pain. I am on Endep, an anti-depressant and neuroleptic BUT I take it for pain caused by a herniated disc.

I need to interview someone who has suffered with an injury to there back for my assignment?
Q. The interview: How long have you had the injury? How did the injury occur? What are your symptoms? How are you being treated for it? Is the injury related to, or aggravated by, you job? Where exactly is the injury located on your back? Is there a way of preventing this type of injury? I would very much appreciate it if I could hear from someone who has suffered from a back injury to answer these questions as best as they can. Thanks!

A. I was injured in car accident in 1998. I was rear ended while stopped at a traffic light. The wreck happened on a Thursday but the full extent of the pain didn't hit until Saturday night. I had serious pain in my lower and mid back. I was sent to a specialist who also did nerve tests on me. I was sent to physical therapy for 6 months. I was also on several different medications for pain, muscle relaxers, etc. No my injury was not job related and my job at the time didn't aggravate it. I don't think this could have been prevented. Maybe the guy behind me should have been paying more attention. Please let me know if you need anything else. I'm also still suffering from pain.

Q. My dog has a back injury it my be a slipped disc or fracture. He is being treated by a vet. But so for he is not responding to the steroids. Also the vet said he my need surgery, what will this entail will he be the same. And what will be the cost?
Asked by topaze5448b - Tue Nov 7 14:05:58 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. How much it will cost will depend on where you live. Around here it costs about $5000 CAD. When my basset girl had back surgery, afterwards I had to walk her with her hind end in a sling, so her legs were free to move if she wanted to, but they didn't have to support her weight. I also had to do range of motion exercises with her legs. I found that she was able to run before she could walk, and she could walk before she could stand still. It took a while, but eventually she recovered enough to get around fine, although she always walked like she was coming home from a bar. :-) If you are not able to afford the surgery, don't give up on him too quickly. I've known a number of dogs that recovered, even when the vets said they would… [cont.]

Can a back injury cause this to happen to my bladder?
Q. I injured my back and was told I probably have a bulged disc. Since the injury I have had problems with my bladder that are slowly getting worse. It started as trouble starting my stream. Now I go a ton of times during the day, but only tiny amounts and always feel like I have to go but can't. Since yesterday I have started dribbling a bit. Usually a couple minutes after I finish. I will leave the bathroom start doing whatever and a tiny bit of urine flows out. Could this be from my back injury or something else? Any ideas on what I should do? It's becoming quite bothersome and a bit scary. I am a 27yr old male who is in great shape, if this has any bearing on anything.
Asked by BigBiz - Mon Nov 13 03:27:38 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What you are describing is one symptom of Cauda Equina Syndrome. It is rare but it is also a medical emergency. Your buldging disc could be pressing against the bundle of nerve roots (causa equina) at the end of the spinal cord. The nerve roots are compressed or paralyzed, which cuts off sensation and movement of bowel/bladder and lower extremeties. Permenant damage may occur if treatment is not received quickly. I hope this is not the case, but I want you to be fully informed. Whenever I have a patient with a low back injury I tell them the warning signs of CES and instruct them to go to the ER if the following occurs: # Bladder and/or bowel dysfunction, causing you to retain waste or be unable to hold it. # Severe or progressive… [cont.]

A. Your body is insulin resistant, continuous high levels of carbs have damaged the receptors. You can go thru life white knuckling it or fix the problem. You will probably never be able to process carbs the way a person with a still functioning body can (obesity is an epidemic, it's not just you). You eat carbs & in a functioning body, glucose goes to the muscles, in the insulin resistant, they go straight to the fat cells. Your body is screaming for nutrition but insulin (the fat storage hormone) is diverting it directly to the fat cells, you are driven to eat with this continuous blood glucose, insulin battle raging in your system. Your blood sugar gets low which signals you to eat, your tissues are screaming for nutrition, you try to feed… [cont.]

Can a back injury lead to scoliosis?
Q. I injured my back in a soccer game about two years ago and recently my doctor told me I have symptoms of scoliosis. (I was shocked, my back appears to be fine, to me at least except for the usual lower back pain after strenuous physical activity. The only type of back problems I ever had were due to my injury. Is it possible that a back injury cn lead to scoliosis?
Asked by J(: - Fri Oct 2 23:44:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes as that's how i got my scoliosis i injured my back at 12 damaging a few vertebra's so it made the spine curve in to an s shape, and scoliosis is just a medical word for curved spine and your spine can curve for many different reasons,i had to have surgery for mine and am still curved due to the damage my injury did, my consultant call it scoliosis even though it was an injury, that's because like i said scoliosis is just a medical word for curved spine, so it could have happened that way for you but you will need an x-ray to find out the cause of the scoliosis(curve).

what is the severity of my back injury?
Q. I performed a moderately/relatively heavy squat and my lower back popped when I went deeper than usual. knowing something wasn't "right", I racked the weight, became light-headed and momentarily passed out. 8 hrs later, lower back is tight and bending over is not an option. Anyone have insight on possible damage?? strained or pulled muscle or disc issue? Taking motrin and applying heat, but curious to the root of the injury. Over flexion or too much compression? lots of questions, but quite gimpy.

A. Okay the best way to lose weight is to concentrate on 2 main things, this is your diet and your workout. ---Diet--- You need to get both of them right, now your diet should work like this... you should be eating a meal every 2-3 hours but not a junk food snack/meal. When i say meal i mean something which is healthy ie you might have some pasta with tuna, or a quick banana as a snack. The foods you eat should be COMPLEX carbs ie pasta, brown bread etc etc. You also want to try and get as much fruit + ved in a day. Make sure you have a good amount of protein throughout your meals. Now you also need to work out your Basal Metabolic Rate, this simply tells you how many calories you burn a day, you need to find out how much your actually… [cont.]

Is a chiropractor the way to go if you have a neck and back injury due to a car accident.?
Q. I was in a car wreck and the insurance company only offered me 1,000 dollars for my injuries and inconvenience. So I called an attorney, and he sent me to a chiropractor. Due to my injuries he wants me to attend physical therapy with him 3 days a week. I was just wondering if this is going to be covered by my claim and will I get money for my self to get my life back in order.
Asked by Jason - Fri Nov 27 16:21:06 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You need to be examined by a physician. A chiropractor is not a physician and does not have sufficient training to handle head or neck injuries from a car accident. A chiropractor has very limited training, and has no knowledge of how to handle head or neck injuries from a car accident. A Physician with an MD Degree from an Accredited Medical School is the only person who should be advising you on head or neck injuries from a car accident.

Can I do heavy squats after a back injury?
Q. Recently took an MRI and found that I have a slight disc bulge at L4-L5 in the lower back region. The injury was about 6 months ago. If I take physical therapy, will I be able to go back to squatting with heavy weights (like 200+).
Asked by JPC - Fri Feb 19 11:35:42 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Is the injury 100% healed? Yes-yes, No-it will aggravate the unhealed injury causing you lots of pain. You will compensate and then injure the imbalanced muscles... Physical therapy will not fix/heal a disc bulge, neither will surgery. Honestly I have no idea if this will be of any use to you either. But the price is right so give it a try...or you could just stop weight lifting...suffer...

Does anyone have any idea how much compensation I might be awarded and how long do these cases usually take to pay. Thanks I am living in UK

A. usually $5-15k and it may take a few months to get it. edit: oh, didnt realize you were in the UK. lawsuits generally dont pay as much, plus your pounds are worth more than our dollars... i would guess maybe 2000-5000 pounds.

How long should I wait to workout after a back injury?
Q. I have a problem with my lower back/tailbone area which made it very difficult to walk for awhile. I already made it worse the other day by getting on the treadmill too soon. I am afraid that if I start exercising to soon after the pain goes away that I will make it worse again, but I can't stand all the lying around! I need to exercise! Any advice? (Before you say "See a doctor", I must note that at the moment I do not have health insurance and will see a doctor as soon as that happens, and I realize this is not a substitute for such action.) :)
Asked by Crescent Moon - Wed Apr 5 00:01:40 2006 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Don't do anything till the pain has gone away. Pain is your bodies way of saying "Stop or you will cause serious long term damage!!!" You should then start out with gentle exercise that doesn't place stress on your back (ie NOT the treadmill!!), and that will help rebuild the core muscles around the base of your back. Try swimming, or gentle stretching exercises like yoga, pilates etc. Or even just walking. Also you need to stretch a lot, every single day, so your back doesn't stiffen up.

How much $ should I look for from AAA for minor acicent with a back injury?
Q. I was in an accident this Spring where I was rear ended. There was $1500 damage to my car and I went to physio for 2 months but I still have problems with my back which I didn't have before the accident? They want to settle for $500 and then went up to $1000 on top of my car and doctor bills. What should I be looking for?
Asked by Fiffers - Fri Sep 28 00:58:14 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I wouldn't take that as a settlement. This isn't a fair amount going by the infomration you provided. Please don't hesitate to get the proper medical treatment you need and deserve. I don't think a person can guess or figure out a fair amount in which you are owed. It would be best to seek the help of an attorney.

Can I turn in a workman comp claim for back injury?
Q. I hurt my back on the job in Calif but did not seek treatment for it. It finally "went out" (herniated discs) but not while I was on the job. Can I still turn in a Workman's comp claim and will they approve it?
Asked by AF1 - Tue Jul 21 11:12:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Two questions need to be answered first: 1. Can you prove that the herniated discs are related to the job incident? 2. Are you within the statute of limitations. In CA, the statute of limitations for a personal injury is 1 year. If it has been that long, you can forget about successfully bringing a claim now.
