A. Hi, Dilantin is an anticonvulsant prescription drug used to treat people who suffer from epileptic seizures. According to the New York Methodist Hospital and the Minnesota Men's Health Center, Dilantin (phenytoin) may cause a lower sperm count and can lead to infertility in men. This is, however, not among the most common side effects of the medication, which include headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, mild tremors and nausea. The severity of side effects usually depends on the dosage, as well as on the length of treatment. Some people taking Dilantin have also reported rashes and other skin irritations and liver damage. What are the symptoms of stopping Dilantin gradually?
Q. I never had seizure in my life but had my Brian AVM embolyzed 3 years ago. My neurosurgeon put me on 400mg dilantin per day. After the advice from a physician, I am gradually decreasing my dosage to 300mg. I experience a little restlessness while sitting ( like wanting to shake my feet). Is it due to reducing dilantin? Otherwise I am completely fine. What exactly are the symptoms of reducing dilantin overtime - for a person who never had seizure?
Asked by roomblaze - Mon Feb 1 06:07:58 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Some restlessness is likely on reducing Dilantin. This symptom is temporary and will stop when the dose stabilizes. Reducing the dose is logical in a case with no history of seizures, and no incident after the embolyzation. My advise would be to follow the prescription that your doctor has given.

A. This is the FDA's website that compares namebrand and generic medication. Most of the generic and namebrands are the therapeutically equivalent. Click on search by active ingredient, type in phenytoin, then click search. You can read about the codes by clicking on TE codes at the top.

My wife takes dilantin to control her seizures. How can she switch to a drug with lesser side effects?
Q. We've heard that switching off dilantin will cause seizures, but we've also heard that there are safe ways to do that won't cause seizures. Also, what would be the best drug to switch to?

A. My daughter takes Tegratol, and doesn't have any noticable side effects. As long as you switch under a doctors supervision and they wean her off the dilantin slowly, it should be fine. Just don't suddenly stop taking it.

A. I have been taking Dilantin for over 10 years (for epileptic seizures), and I have felt the same feeling but never related it to my Dilantin (thanks for the insight). What happens to me when my Dilantin levels get too high is dizziness, unstable as far as standing, walking, etc, difficulty talking(slurred speech, stuttering, jumbled , make no sense, etc.),difficulty with sensory(grabbing, holding, etc). Pretty much a doped up feeling.

What should I expect from a dilantin level of 38?
Q. What are the side effects of a high dilantin level?
Asked by Sober Mom - Thu Jun 22 08:24:54 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should expect to have more frequent seizures. An average dilantin level should be around 15. Did your doctor not tell you this when he gave you the results? You either need to lower your dose or get another doctor Hun. To much dilantin can cause serious seizures and even seizure induced comas. Be careful and talk to your doctor.

Can you get pregnant while taking dilantin?
Q. I'm taking dilantin can i get pregnant, If so will it harm the baby?
Asked by kimberlyrenee_08 - Tue Mar 10 21:34:28 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You CAN get pregnant while taking Dilantin, but you SHOULDN'T. It's a category D drug, and is a known teratogen (that is, it's known to cause birth defects). The birth defects that result from Dilantin use in pregnancy can be severe, and range from facial deformities to mental retardation. Most doctors would recommend against taking it during pregnancy, and those that do prescribe it usually order the lowest effective dose possible.

I take 900mg Dilantin for seizures. When is the best time to take my pills?

A. you should take half then 12 hours later take the other half of your prescribed dosage . if your taking them all at one time they aren't staying in your system at an even level to help control your seizures

Q. I have epilepsy and I take Dilantin and when I smoke cigarettes, it brings my levels down.

My advice to you is if smoking brings your levels out of therapeutic range and you have the evidence to support this, then stop smoking. I think you already knew the answer to your question.
