How can I explain the variations in the numbers of ribs and lumbar vertabrae within the evolutionary?
Q. progression? For example, the number of ribs in the intermediate stages of the horse varies from 15 to 19 and finally settles at 18.The number of lumbar vertabrae also alledgedly swings from 6 to 8 and then returns to 6 again..Do you know of any evidence that can cite or refute this argument
Asked by . - Sun Oct 28 10:01:00 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 1. we have 5 lumbar vertabrae, not 6. people who have 6 are missing the top portion of their sacrum, because it is free; just like people with 4 lumbars have an extra segement to their sacrum. This is explained(along with most other varaition) by genetics. The spine actully starts as twice as many segements as there are bones in the adult. When its develpoing the top of one 'prebone' will fuse with the bottom of the one above it forming a hodgepodge of intermixed structures. in embrylogy there are lots of structures that look like other things and often been mistaken as precursors or analogs to totatly unrelated objects. in conclusion genetics rocks.

How long does it take to recover from a lower lumbar spinal fusion?
Q. I had spinal fusion on my L5 S1 lumbar in August. I was released for normal activity by my doctor after three months. I still have more bad days then good. Any words of wisdom? When will it get better?
Asked by Josh P - Fri Jan 16 16:28:48 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First, don't smoke. Smoking is a primary cause in most failed fusions. Stay away from second hand smoke. Don't do any heavy lifting. Engage only in low impact exercise or sports. This may hurt for a long time. Spinal fusion is not like a broken leg. The spine is a complex structure, with lots of nerves involved, and it also acts as a shock absorber for the weight of your body. You may face many more months of healing before you see the pain fade away. It would be best to speak to your physician and see if an appropriate course of physical therapy will help you along this difficult path. By the way, this is where a lot of patients get addicted to pain killers. Don't add that grief to the misery you still suffer.

What is the most fuel efficient crossover vehicle that has power lumbar electric seats with no moon roof?
Q. Every crossover vehicle rated over 20 mpg city that we've examined, doesn't have power seats with lumbar controls, which makes riding in and exiting the vehicle tiring, uncomfortable, and difficult. The marketing ploy of packaging extras like a sun/moon roof, spoilers, body trim, etc. in order for the customer to obtain the power adjusting seats adds unnecessary expense to the cost of the vehicle. When will Detroit cease this nonsense?
Asked by J B - Mon Oct 8 15:23:00 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Power lumbar controls are a luxury. Most cars still use manual controls. If you want it, work harder to buy the higher trim level. And what does Detroit have anything to do with this? All automakers make you get the top level trim to get all the toys.

How long do I need to wait till I can go back to everyday activity after a lumbar puncture?
Q. I had a lumbar puncture yesterday and with my 2nd job I am lifting boxes from I would say 5-20 lbs each and standing for 4 hrs. I just want to make sure I am okay with going back to everyday activities the day after the procedure.
Asked by jennyk0103 - Tue Oct 21 13:43:54 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I guess it depends on how it went and how much pain your in. I had it done on Saturday and i'm only just starting to get back to normal now. Don't know about you but for me the procedure itself went terribly; very painful and the doctor took numerous attempts before she even got to the spinal fluid. As a result there has a lot of tissue damage and bruising. I couldn't bend my back at all for at least three days and the area of insertion was unbelievably painful to the touch. Now the pain has almost all gone but i am still taking strong pain killers. Lifting objects and bending my back does still cause problems even now but by Saturday i think i should be back to normal. So it all depends on how the procedure went really, you should be 100% [cont.]

A. well a real tempurpedic has a 20 year warranty on it so the age of it won't matter unless its older than 20 years , and i have one its the classic and there really isn't lumbar support what it does is allow the heavier parts of your body to sick farther without pressure so depending on they way you sleep your body gives its own lumbar support on the bed iv had one now for 5 years and i love it and on top of that there is no motion in the bed when you move so you won't wake up your spouse or whom ever is in the bed

What are the nerves of the lumbar spine?
Q. I have an assignment about spondylosis of the lumbar spine, and I have to mention the normal anatomy of the lumbar spine. I'd like help with what nerves are involved in the lumbar spine. Thanks in advance. Thanks for your answers =)

A. Together, your spinal cord and your brain make up your central nervous system, which controls most of the functions of your body. Your spinal cord runs approximately 15 to 17 inches from the base of your brain to your waist and is composed of long nerve fibers that carry messages to and from your brain. These nerve fibers feed into nerve roots that emerge between your vertebrae the 33 bones that surround your spinal cord and make up your backbone. There, the nerve fibers organize into peripheral nerves that extend to the rest of your body. For more info, click on the link below.

Should lumbar puncture be performed on my preterm infant?
Q. My baby is in specialist care unit at the moment as she came out early. She's got an infection, but doctors don't know what causes it. Blood tests were carried out, but apparently they also didn't help figure out the causes. Now they want to carry out a lumbar puncture to collect a fluid sample. Should it be done? Will it leave any long-term risk?

A. Of course it should be done. My nephew was prem and needed surgery when he was under 5lbs. He`s absolutely fine, now. It`s only natural to be worried, but the Doctors in special care know what they are doing.

How serious is lumbar disk disease with myelopathy?
Q. My husband got his MRI back today (he's 26) and that was the diagnosis. He is in the Army and he really likes it so hope this won't affect that. They gave him some medicine and they are gonna do a spinal tap thing and see how that goes. If that goes good they will try physical therapy. His only restriction as of now is no running. I have no ideal how severe it is becuse I didn't go and he didn't ask! Also the paper is labeled as illness/ disease.
Asked by miss renee - Thu May 27 14:48:56 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Lumbar disk disease, itself, is rarely serious. Myelopathy is generally a serious condition that requires immediate surgery, however, if he has radiographic evidence of myelopathy but not symptomatic signs, this is less serious and often thought to be "fluke" finding. If he's having clinical signs of cord compression: weakness, tripping, falling, footdrop, inability to eliminate his urine or contain his bowels, this is a very serious condition that needs to be addressed right away. Scary things are often found on MRIs, but the clinical picture doesn't add up...it takes consideration of both the imaging studies as well as the clinical picture to make a more accurate prognosis.

A. If I'm reading this right, the pain is traveling back to front. Knee jerk reaction is the kidney. You're beyond Over the Counter Meds. See the MD or emergency room - they live for this sort of thing. Sooner the better - no false bravery.

What do they do for fracture in lower lumbar spine?
Q. What do they do for an older person that falls and has a compression fracture in their lower spine? How do they diagnose this? If it is Xray can MRI pick up more breaks that Xray missed? How long would they usually give a person OFF work to heal? Would they use a back BRACE or therapy or something? What would the pain exactly feel like? If you can answer all these questions- u get 10 pts!

A. They usually use an X-ray, but sometimes MRI's are used for more difficult cases. Depending on how severe the injury is, Im going to say from 6 months to a year. Yes you will wear a brace and possibly physical rehab and a chiropractor. The pain can range from a constant dull ache to very sharp pains, the pain is usually constant. If you think you have broken your spine please go in!! You could cause further damage by putting this off!!
