How can I help my 7 year old son who had a nightmare about his mother being angry?
Q. He has dreamed recently of his mother being angry with him, and also in his dream his mother prevents him from waking up from his nightmare. He was visibly upset about this when he woke in the morning and wouldn't move until I asked him to get up. He has had nightmares about his mother before, perhaps once or twice. I'm aware that my wife can be threatening, and I have witnessed her being forceful and angry with him.

A. How can you help your son? You know already. You have our agreement that your un-ease with this is spot-on. Trust your gut. Trust your son. Now--RIGHT now, quit reading and get on the phone. You need to talk to someone else before you talk to your wife. Another perspective, a professional perspective, can help you anticipate what her reaction is going to be--and what you might be able to learn from her reaction. Yellow pages (paper or online): child abuse hotline; ask about the symptoms of verbal abuse adn ask about the characteristics of verbal abusers. Pediatrician--do you know your kids' pediatrician? Call. Now. Today. Ask the same questions. If you do not know, do not ask your wife; call your health insurance company and ask who… [cont.]
