A. hmm it is not the best posture for shoulder injuries. depending on the severity of the injury, you could use a belt from behind around the hips and pull back, thereby taking the weight off the shoulders?

A. Seems a rotator cuff issue. How much does it hurt? Try to exercise around it. Healing can take upto 6 months.

How can i prevent shoulder injury?
Q. I swim anyywhere from 4-6 times a week and I specialize in butterfly. When i swim a lot, or do a lot of backstroke my shoulders really hurt.I have a friend who also swims who got tendenitis and has to have fluid removed from her shoulder every week... i don't want that to happen to me. I really just want to prevent injury in general. Are there any special exercises or stretches i can do to protect my shoulders?
Asked by sarah t - Mon Apr 21 18:22:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, you need to strengthen your rotor cuff muscles. These muscles cause a lot of the tendonitis in swimmers. Any type of overhead motion can wear on them. Your backstroke is a good example. Butterfly is another good example. Anyway, go to this page and scroll halfway down. You will see three exercises. Do them about every other day, to every 3rd day. You can use soup cans, or water bottles in place of the dumbbells. It does not take much weight to exercise them. They are small muscles, and that is the main reason they can get hurt easily. After a couple of months of doing them, your shoulders should feel better. You will see a good improvement in your butterfly also.

Is there any relief for a nagging shoulder injury?
Q. I experienced a shoulder injury in October of 2005. I've been to different doctors and have had x-rays and mri's taken but yet everyone seems to agree that there isnt a tear or break anywhere in my shoulder area. I keep experiencing sharp pains everytime i raise my hand up over my head or make a throwing motion. After too much use, the pain is really uncomfortable and sometimes it results in me not being able to move my arm for a day or two This is very frusterating since I am an athletic person that likes to lift weights and play sports which involve these specific motions. Icing and anti-inflammatory's have not resulted in a solution either. Im curious if there is anyone out there that has had a similar injury and if so how did you get… [cont.]

A. It sounds like a nerve may be pinched. You should consult a sports rehabilitation center and see what they have to say and if there's any thing they can do for you. Other than that, you can try rotator cuff exercises. You may have heard about them. It involves using a light dumbell (about 5 lbs maximum). You would lay on your side, on a bench. With the dumbbell in your hand and your upper arm, making an "L" shape at the side of your body (with your forearm crossing over your stomach, as the starting positon), rotate the dumbell away from your stomach, until the dumbbell is paralell with the floor and your arm is at 90 degrees and repeat. Do 3 sets of 10 reps for each arm. You should do this no more than twice a week. This will strengthen… [cont.]

Q. I play tennis almost every day and lately my shoulder has been really sore. It hasn't dislocated at all but whenever I play I'm in discomfort. I can't move my arm much out in front of me and when I serve particularly it hurts. Any idea what it might be and how I can prepare pre-match to help it? Thanks.

Learning to play left-handed after a shoulder injury?
Q. I was a pretty good player for many years, but developed a rotator cuff problem in my right shoulder. Rather than getting the surgery, I am simply going to avoid the sort of over the shoulder motions that cause pain. The general pain can be controlled with cortisone shots once or twice a year. As far as playing tennis, the normal ground strokes are still hitable, but the serve is impossible. So I've tried switching to the left hand. I have found that left-handed ground strokes are not a problem, but the serve is. It is like learning the serve all over again, even though I know how to do it. What recommendations would anyone have for bringing the service game up to snuff using the other hand? Maybe just practice practice practice.
Asked by Shaun Super - Mon Mar 5 15:16:23 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I used to play with an open level playing who has his arm amputated at the wrist. So he served left handed. He did pretty well with it too. Wasn't quite as fast as his right handed serve (according to him), but he placed it well and did just fine. Like anything in tennis, repetition is how you learn. If you were a good player, you know how to serve, so it's just a matter of getting your left hand to cooperate. Luckily for you serving doesn't even require a second player to practice. Just jump out there with a hopper or two and serve your brains out til you get it down. I learned how to serve righty just to play with my students.

What is a good chest exercise for someone with a shoulder injury?
Q. im not trying to lose weight. im trying to get bigger.
Asked by Jiberish - Tue Jan 5 08:49:38 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Anything on a decline. I had torn a rotator cuff several years ago, and actually had to stop most chest exercises for the first 2 months. Then my doctor allowed me to do decline presses. From there, I expanded to decline flies, etc. Amazingly, the declines had no impact on my shoulder. The drawback is that declines emphasize the lower pecs, and no where else. But, it was good (for me) just to be able to hit my pecs after a 2 month layoff. So try some light weight, decline dumbell presses and judge for yourself if, and how badly, they effect your shoulder injury. Good luck on your recovery.

Anyone knows a website to get info on how to get rid of my shoulder injury due to weight lifting?
Q. It's not swollen but there are certain angle of movements I make that I feel pain. I'm sure there are exercises/therapy out there to correct this. Thanks in advance for the help.

A. Forget the website, you may have a tear in your rotater cup, hopefully not, the best thing is to rest it , no exercise, then after about 1 week extend your arms and do small circles but slow and easy and then large ones, if you still feel pain get to the doctor, it is a rotater cup and you need medical attention, DON'T what ever you do go to a chiropractor or try and do more weights right now! good luck!

Can you please help me with advice about tendonitis from a shoulder injury 2 months ago?
Q. I'm 51, female, was injured when my arm was pulled by husband 2 months ago, and the pain keeps getting worse- having trouble sleeping, and range of motion affected. Doctor wanted to give me cortisone shot, physical therapy hurts, i'm not sure i want to take so much Aleve. Any suggestions?
Asked by Diana - Fri Nov 30 03:01:06 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the pain is getting worse despite treatment, it's time for further studies. MRI could rule out more serious pathology such as rotator cuff or labral tear. Sometimes doing the PT after the cortisone shot is much better. You might want to consider this. Do not put you arm in a sling, at the very least, tenonitis needs movement, not immobilization and this is repeatedly being demonstrated in the research. The key is to perform movements that mimic your symptoms, but only at an intensity and number of repetitions that will not leave you feeling worse immediately afterwards. Then these movements need to be performed several times a day...sometimes it's only one or two simple movements, but the key is the repetition without worsening.… [cont.]
